The Deputy often gets asked by candidates who are interested in joining a start-up (pre-seed to Series A round).
For those of you who crave the thrill of chaos and want to dive headfirst into the unpredictable world of early stage start-ups, then be ready for the wild west of the business world.
The pre-seed to Series A is high risk, high reward. We're not talking about your cushy 9 to 5 gigs or your mediocre coffee runs. Find a start-up where you believe in a cause that resonates with you and understand the unique value you bring to the table. I've had countless conversations with candidates curious about diving into the start-up scene.
If you're a tech whiz, congratulations, you're in high demand, and the start-up world is your oyster. If you're more of a G&A person with no tech skills, you better be ready to hustle hard and get sh*t done. Technical skills or not, recruiters play a crucial role in the start-up ecosystem. They're the unsung heroes that fuel the company's growth by bringing in the right talent at the right time.
It's interesting to note that while many early stage companies prioritize hiring technical talent, recruiters are often one of the first roles to be filled.
The Lenny newsletter does a great job of diving into prioritization of key hires of a B2B start-up. Some of the first hires might surprise you. Use this list of hires to think about your next career move into a start-up.

Coffee Talk ☕
Let’s talk about coffee while having coffee - Here are 30 coffee facts…
For starters, coffee is a fruit. Not the milkshake type coffee that you buy at Starbucks, but if you drink it black, you are having some fruit. Coffee beans are actually seeds found inside the fruit of a coffee plant and they come in the form of a coffee cherry. The coffee seed is roasted and brewed to make coffee. Basically, you are drinking fruit!
Second - You can take a “nappucino” or “coffee nap”. I’ve only done this once or twice and it kind of worked but I am not a good napper. Basically, you drink the coffee and it takes about 20 minutes for caffeine to kick in and while the caffeine is running through your body you take a power nap. Boom! You wake up more alert.

Congratulations to anyone who read the Techno-Optimist Manifesto by Marc Andreessen...
It's a whopping 5,000 words of technological evangelism that might take you a solid 15 minutes or more to digest, especially if you're the contemplative type.
So, what's the gist of this manifesto? In a nutshell, technology is painted as the silver bullet for all of humanity's woes, and it even claims to have cracked the code on the meaning of life itself. FYI - the author of this manifesto, Marc Andreessen, is a tech billionaire. So, it does make me wonder just how much he can relate to the average Joe, like the Instacart shopper delivering his groceries, all while he rakes in the big bucks from the very app that he invested $millions into.
But hey, don't just take our word for it. Dive into the manifesto yourself and let those thought-provoking ideas marinate in your brain. They might just be the perfect conversation starters for your Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends…
