Remember 2021 when you could turn away work and do the “quiet quitting” thing? Yeah, that’s probably not cool anymore because you will struggle to find a new job. Companies are taking longer to make decisions and have more applicants for each job.
It’s a simple supply and demand situation → There are more candidates in the market BUT this doesn't mean companies should ghost candidates.
Prospective candidates: Here’s how you get a job - use your network. Network and network…When you are done networking, ask your network for referrals and job leads. Use Google docs to create a resume OR use LinkedIn AND do more networking. While you are at it, check out Deputy Talent’s slack channel - great for networking. No shame in promoting what we do.
Prospective employers: It’s never OK to ghost candidates. Yes, you feel important and powerful because you have a job and can take your time to respond to candidates but it’s never OK to ghost candidates, unless you're stuck at the company summer picnic and can’t get to your ATS.
A news related story about the interview struggle candidates are feeling. 2 Firmware Engineers successfully completed 4 rounds of interviews, several conversations with recruiters and sadly the company went on a hiring freeze right before the offer went out to both candidates. The good news is that the company had some great recruiters working the jobs (Hat-tip Nate Dog and Tay Tay to stop the candidates from getting ghosted).
Hiring freezes are common right now so don’t celebrate until you are sleeping through new hire orientation. Keep your head-up candidates. Good times ahead…
Employers are still hiring candidates though. In Utah, the unemployment rate is 2.3% versus the United States average of 3.4%. This means a lot of people are still employed and a sign employers are still hiring.

Tired of seeing the same people at your local coffee shop? Why not move to Tulsa, Oklahoma and get $10K for doing it. As part of the Tulsa Remote program, they will pay you to work remotely in Tulsa. Since launching this around 2018, this program has been a big success for Tulsa and remote workers and they have welcomed over 2,400 remote workers to their town.
See you later Mom and Dad - I’m finally on my own and Tulsa is paying me $10K to leave your basement. I still need your Netflix password though…
Congratulations are in order for showing up 🥂
According to APA, 3 in 5 workers reported negative impacts of work-related stress. If you are experiencing lack of interest, motivation, lack of effort or low energy - you might be getting burnt out. Job burnout can be even worse for company founders.
Pay attention to burnout. Some ways to help job burnout - Hire help with the workload if you can, take a vacation, work-out, and watch your alcohol intake. Other ways - find a mentor, focus on what’s good with your work or spend time with the happy customers.
If you are leading a team and you are burnt-out, no matter how hard you try and hide the burn-out they see it and it might rub off on them. The best move is to take care of yourself, then help others.
